Identify Older Detector (3 replies)

Last summer I was working a park in Northern Utah and ran across a guy using a older machine. I think it was a White but not 100%. All I can remember is it was configured like my old XLT but instead of the digital screen like I have.. this one had a large analog meter mounted in I think the same place. I think it also had a battery box under the arm like the xlt but foggy about that.

I am sorry but that is all I can remember about it. Can anyone throw me a bone on this one.. so I can do some research.? I have always wanted one of these older meter types . Should have paid more attention but then I should have also bought gold ten years ago .

1. Its Old
2. large analog meter complete with swinging needle
3. White I think.

Thanks in advance.

Just remember it can be a tweakers dream or perhaps nightmare..

After years of off and on XLTing and reading 10 or so books on the unit just keep it simple and remember what works in one area may not work well in yours due to mineralization and the net is full of programs and certainly good reading but experimentation is in order.

I will say for the best depth tweak the relic program in increments and the depth increase from preamp gain from 8 to 15 increases you depth perhaps an inch more so keep this in mind..
For jewelry hunting notch out the prevalent tabs usually 3-4 in your local park and it will cut out a lot of your digging. Also the hot spot for gold rings is #10 to #20 which usually covers low foil to nickles and dig all these to increase your chances as perhaps 50 percent of the gold rings found include the aforementioned numbers.

Remember you have four programs to form programs so use them wisely and only takes seconds to change in field..

Best book I ever read was written by a Pa. Chiropractor and certainly out of print but a must read for ardent XLT users.

I used an XLT for many years.(been detecting 38 years) Then about 20 years ago I started experimenting with about every detector out there. Then the other day I took my XLT out for a little hunt. Had not had it out for about a year or so. I was amazed at my self. All these years I had tried to make my new detectors act like my XLT.So in the last two days I sold six of my later detectors. I am going back to my trusty XLT. Just thought I would like to get it off my chest......Jack

A friend of mine has a White's XLT that he bought new two years ago - he only has the stock coil that came with the machine.
He needs a small coil for hunting in heavy iron and in overgrown areas.

My Questions ...

( 1 ) - Can you get a 6" EQ2 coil for the XLT's - or only the 5" EQ2 ?
( 2 ) - What other small coils do you XLT user's like the best ?

Thanks in advance for your replies !

I bought a Spectrum XLT from a guy recently. It is not new. It came with a Black 5.3 Max coil and a the Spectrum coil that comes with the unit. Can someone tell me what coil would be better for coins? Would I be better with using the coin program that is on the unit or is there a better option to program in the unit manually? I would appreciate any help. I have no clue what I am doing. Thank you.

XLT programing VS Eagle ll SL 90 programing (5 replies)

Hi all you, I finally bought an Eagle ll SL 90 and only twenty later. My questions are these. If any of you out there are familiar with both the Eagle 90 and the XLT, Can the XLT programs be used on the eagle ?? I am not familiar with the XLT but there are a ton of programs out there and I am having a hard time finding detailed info on the Eagle ll. For some silly reason all you youngsters think 24 years is a long time. Ha,Ha. For me it flew by. Can't seem to slow it down. Please kick in any info or comments.

Had a couple XLT's before and can't really say why I sold them. Grass always looks greener I guess. Missed the smooth audio and accurate meter. They may not be the depth demons but for covering ground very hard to beat even if they are 20 some years old. I also have a CZ6a and that also is a oldie but will beat the pants off a lot of the newer models. You just have to hunt slower with it. For coin hunting these two units have worked very well in the past for me. Best Wishes Joe

I've been using my XLT since 1994 and can't get enough of it. I saw they stopped making them a few years ago so I was able to find a new one still in the box!
Happy detecting all!

XLT + Bigfoot settings (2 replies)

Just recently picked an XLT and managed to find a Bigfoot coil to go with it. My plan is to use the combination on the dry sand. I've seen some posts suggesting that the prospecting setting instead of the beach setting is preferred and I'm wondering which one is better? If anybody else can provide any useful tips it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where did the Eagle Spectrum fit in Whites line up? (2 replies)

Just was wondering what members knew, or, remembered about the Whites Eagle Spectrum.

I have one. I have never felt proficient with it, or, that I was getting the finds that I had with my older other brand machine.

Just wondered how it fit in Whites line up, and if was manufactured only for a short time, before a machine, the older XLT, came out.

Thanks for any information that you might have, or, suggestions as to books, videos, youtube, etc. that might help me gain more conficence with the machine.

Two big advantages of the XLT over the V3 series.

Cost, if you shop, you can ger a clean XLT for $250 or less. Likewise extra coils are inexpensive used - $25 - $75 typically.

Bigfoot. You can still get a used bigfoot for the XLT for $200 or a bit less if you look really hard. I had a Bigfoot for my V3, when I sold the V3 I got $1k. I sold the Bigfoot for $400 - the going price for bigfoot for DfX series and above. Also, Although I no longer have a V series and a bigfoot for it to compare,it to, the bigfoot on my XLT goes as deep as,the 9.5" coil. I am really sure the Bigfoot on my V wasn't nearly as deep.

Oh yes, I also have a Magnum Force 25" coil in case I want to go hunting for old trash pits or privies. It detects a railroad spike at 2' and an 8" circular saw blade at 3 1/4 feet.

Great fun for less than $500 for the whole kit!

One more general comment.

When Whites started making programmable detectors, they had to make default programs. Far beyond the old marker triangles for the knobs on the analog machines.

For were probably good reasons, the pre programmed ones were all pretty tame, making for example, my V3i seem like a detector with no real depth.

To get real spark out of an XLT, DFX or V3, you have to dig into lots of settings and play around in your dirt and your targets to find combinations that find what you are hunting for. It isn't easy and a lot of folks decide it's not for them.

My Deus has the same sort of range of variables, but all of the pre programmed modes are ptetty "sparky". When I tune up my XLT it goes as deep as the Deus and comes surprisingly close in ability to sniff out medium and high conductors amongst iron trash. The Signagraphmis a bery superior diisplay for this purpose bumthe way - if set up for that work.

I won one in a raffle. tonight, It looks a little big and clumsy. They say it is water proof. I will have to make a holster for it. I hope that it is better then the Minelab 25.

XLT screen problem (4 replies)

Turned my XLT on the other day and I could not even make out the menu enough to choose a program. I muddled thru the menu up and down until I thought I had the right custom program and by luck it was right. However, the horizontal lines were so bad that you could not see what VDI was showing for the target and the icons were also not good enough to tell what was what. I was letting my daughter use it as her first time metal detecting. Pinpointing was also only usable for the sound portion ramping up when you get over the target, the depth and bar were not showing very well. She used it for a while and I would go see when she found or located something and I would get a VDI reading and pinpoint it for her with my V3i. Then about 30 minutes or so later, the screen got a little better, she could see most of the VDI and enough of the icons to see if it was telling her it was a penny, foil , ring, etc. I tried dumping the battery with the machine on to reset it, changed programs, but the white lines still show. I have included 2 pictures of the screen with the white lines....bad picture, taken at night in my house and without flash you see nothing, with flash, it blares out part of the screen, but the pics should be kind of ok to show what I am talking about. This XLT is old, but when I got it, I did not know anyone to ask questions and I would bet it does not have 10 hours total on the machine. It never showed these lines before the other day. Has anyone seen this before? Is the lcd going out? Is it something in the board? Is this something I can fix or will it have to be sent to the factory? What will it cost to fix this?
