Picked up a couple of XLT, One with tricked out elliptical coil. (2 replies)

Recently, Picked up a couple of Craigslist XLT's. Both the latest 1.1 version, One is beatup the other in much better condition. I'm keeping the abused one, the other is going to a buddy for what I put into it.

Strolling through the menu, was taken how advanced they are. Remarkable features for an early-mid nighties detector, no wonder many continue to enjoy the XLT.

Check out the elliptical coil, Yes it works but it's auctally a Blue Max coil. The bluemax coil was banged up so I switched the original blue max coil shell with a gutted elliptical coil, auctally looks pretty cool and works great.

Recently, Ordered Don's Deep Relic Program. I'm curious to see how the XLT will do out in farm land, from what I'm seeing with a couple of recent hunts, the XLT should fare well as a relic detector.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

Hello all.

New to the forum but not detecting.

I've been swinging the 800 on my xlt quite awhile. Recently it has been giving high and annoying threshold sound thru my grey ghosts and also if it bumps anything on either side of my swing it falses.
Have any of you had this issue and is there anything I can do short of replacing it? I have a few other coils for the machine and switched over to bullseye again without any of the above interference.

Any help is appreciated. HH.

Just purchased a mint Spectrum XLT. After owning many other machines I decided to find an XLT to be used as my primary machine. I have found more Civil War relics with my previous XLT than any other machine I have owned. It's not the deepest machine out there but I really enjoy the Signagraph to tell what the target is. This XLT won't be leaving any time soon.........

I won one in a raffle. tonight, It looks a little big and clumsy. They say it is water proof. I will have to make a holster for it. I hope that it is better then the Minelab 25.

XLT screen problem (4 replies)

Turned my XLT on the other day and I could not even make out the menu enough to choose a program. I muddled thru the menu up and down until I thought I had the right custom program and by luck it was right. However, the horizontal lines were so bad that you could not see what VDI was showing for the target and the icons were also not good enough to tell what was what. I was letting my daughter use it as her first time metal detecting. Pinpointing was also only usable for the sound portion ramping up when you get over the target, the depth and bar were not showing very well. She used it for a while and I would go see when she found or located something and I would get a VDI reading and pinpoint it for her with my V3i. Then about 30 minutes or so later, the screen got a little better, she could see most of the VDI and enough of the icons to see if it was telling her it was a penny, foil , ring, etc. I tried dumping the battery with the machine on to reset it, changed programs, but the white lines still show. I have included 2 pictures of the screen with the white lines....bad picture, taken at night in my house and without flash you see nothing, with flash, it blares out part of the screen, but the pics should be kind of ok to show what I am talking about. This XLT is old, but when I got it, I did not know anyone to ask questions and I would bet it does not have 10 hours total on the machine. It never showed these lines before the other day. Has anyone seen this before? Is the lcd going out? Is it something in the board? Is this something I can fix or will it have to be sent to the factory? What will it cost to fix this?

I don't play around with the programs very much , but decided to use the coin & jewelry program instead of just the coin one & helped my finds some. Then I started to think (which will get me into trouble) .What effect would the beach & jewelry peogram have being used in highly mineralized soil I normally hunt.

AC Sensitivity Question? (3 replies)

I have just started back with a XLT after many years.I only used factory programs and I really never found any coins below 4" (I mostly hunted a tornado ravaged area around my home. ,are neighborhood go hit by a F4 to F5 tornado just leveled everything!) that is what got me into this hobby. With that said I decided after I got familiar again with the XLT I went to a ball field I hunted in the past and I turned up the AC Sensitivity to 68 and then to 70 using the coin / jewelry program with the 950 x top coil, the ground is nice topsoil and is very moist to wet in places. I am finding coins at 5" to 7.5",not sure if is just the soil conditions or what. Now to get to my question, I found the VDI numbers are coming in at a higher number on the scale and jump around and are broken up a bit under the 5" deep mark and read more normal above the 5" mark, also the deeper targets will not lock on good and will only give a very quick high pitch tone and a bit broken up(is this normal? will the wet ground affect the VDI scale?),I have been digging all these very quick high tones and finding older coins, well mid 60s for dates I believe there are deeper coins here topsoil is very deep over a foot in places.I hit this old ball field ( no longer being used ) and sourround area very hard years ago and found a lot of shallow coins most of my target now are below 5 " .Not really sure why I never found deeper coins here before now. Any info or ideas would be appreciated.Thank you.

Three and a half hour hunt I found,
10 quarters
5 dimes
5 pennies

AMERICAN Flag pin
small girls bow charm ring ,no markings on it
two keys
oh and of course a pile of pull taps several different types,
a few pieces of aluminum

Most all the coins and pull tabs were below 5"

I had a 950 coil that came with a used XLT which falsed when bumped. You could narrow it down to the front of the coil, tapping it hard with the coil flat to the ground would produce a +95

So I did some searches on opening up the clam shell case that holds the windings and found only one post where the fella had cut the case open with a hack saw. I contacted him to see if he had any other pictures but he did not.

So, I took a close look at the coil and could see it was held together with some sort of adhesive (picture 1). Rather than cutting, I figured I would try some CA adhesive de-bonder called Cyanoacrylate De-bonder which can be purchased at any hobby shop.
You need to wear latex gloves or similar as this product can be absorbed and cause issues if in excess, also ventilation.

You want to hold the coil so the glue line is flat and level so the debonder will stay on the glue. Apply a small amount of Debonder to the glue in a 3" length, hold the coil so it sits on the glue as it can and will soften the plastic of the clam shell. Wait bout 40 seconds and scrape with a small pocket screw driver. Re-apply if needed. Once you get the glue removed you can use a xacto knife to get what remains out of the grove between the two shells. In the end the screwdriver was the best tool to do both operations (Scrape off the bead of glue and also clean out the between the to shells.
You must do this on the center hole and the outer edge. If you do it correctly the shell will pop apart with the screw driver and very little prying, you should not need to apply a lot of force.
Use your razor to make an arrow on the bottom pointing at the front center for re-installation alignment before you open them up.

As you can see in the photos, the coils are epoxied to a poly foam piece which is glued to the top half the shell. Fox has talked of a loose shield, I did not see a shield so hopefully it is not under the poly foam ..

What I found was that the Tx winding (big one) was no longer attached to the epoxy in the very front of the coil, right where you could bump the coil and cause the false signal. I used plastic 2 part epoxy and then silicon when I ran out of epoxy to anchor the winding to the cover and the existing epoxy. I probably should have waited and picked up some JB weld as it is thinner and flows better than the 2 part in the plunger style tubes.

There is a white wire you can see in the pictures next to the black piece of foam rubber. The wire is held in place with tape and epoxy, it is used to tune the coils null. DO NOT MOVE IT OR TOUCH IT.
The Null is the electrical balance between the TX and Rx coil which allows them to then see the disturbance caused by metal entering the field. If the NULL is off the coil will not work correctly so be careful as it take special gear to tune the coil.

Once whatever is loose has been repaired, sand the edges of both shells where they will meet with some 180-220 sand paper to smooth any damage you did taking them apart and provide a course surface for the adhesive to grab on to. Blow clean with compressed air and wipe all mating surfaces with denatured or rubbing alcohol and clean rag.

Put the shell together, plug in the coil and air test it to verify it is fixed. You could also tape the shell and field test it before making the repair permanent .

Then use NEW (not expired as it does not work if expired) Silicon adhesive sealer to seal the shells. Use your finger to press the silicone into the crack between the shells and smooth when packed.

Let set and field test.

Still have to field test but looks to be a 100% success from my tests before gluing.
Hope someone finds this helpful.

Hi Guy's - I'm posting this question for a friend of mine that hunts with a White's XLT Spectrum - he bought it new about three years ago.

We hunt a lot of junkie sites - around old abandoned houses - cellar holes, etc.
He only has the stock 10" coil - what small coils do you like the best on your XLT's ?

Thanks in advance for you replies and good hunting !

I hate to be that newbie who asks a stupid question, but can I run any coil that will fit on my xlt (or any other machine for that matter)? Are coils model specific or can I pick up any whites coil and run it? I'm just looking for a rule of thumb as I'd like to have options to experiment with if they will work, thanks for any advice!

I saw a guy on youtube stating he gets 10"-15", I find 15" hard to believe.

Just started hunting a new area my deepest was just the other day just shy of 8" silver dime ,950 coil. I am getting coins here down to 7"-7 1/2 guite often and also some in a few other spots I go to, but those spots are thinning out quickly.

I have two spot that have great potentail. This new one I just started and a very old carnival grounds I have found nice stuff in and two merc's. Can't hunt the carnival ground till they mow it again it is almost waist high now.Was told they only mow it a few times a year.

I am still playing with programs to try and get deeper. When I first started I could only get 4"-4 1/2 "

Thanks to all the members here that have helped me with my questions.

I understand the XLT pretty good now, have over 150 hours on it just need to keep at it, trial and error.

Still saving penny's for a V3i, it may be awhile!
